Americans + phone = flip type cell phones, i think this is the trend going in American mobile phone market for quite a long time, above equation really holds good for American cell phone industry, though now the times are changing and American people are slowly getting attracted towards touch phones 
and cell phones with QWERTY keypad but still it is said that many Americans like cell phone which is FLIP.
But recently there was a survey which showed European hated flip phones as far as American counter parts loved their flip phones, i always wondered why American like flip phones because when i saw movies, documentaries, or any Television shows most of the time i see characters or casts portraying flip mobiles i think many of you would have felt the same way.
It was from 2005 i started a habit of searching the mobile phone catalogs of major American carriers such as T-Mobile, Verizon wireless, AT&T, Vodafone, Nextel etc to look whether any company has released new phone because back then major mobile phone companies were releasing new phones to European and American Market first before releasing it in India, but whenever i browsed through catalogs i could see 60% of the mobiles in American catalogs were always "Flip Phones" which i really hated, but it was opposite in European Markets they loved "Bar Phones" like we asians do, but recently this year trend has changed a bit American mobile shelves are filled with More bar like touch and qwerty phone like never before.
It is said that Nokia lost quite a large amount of share in american market because they stopped doing flip phone because rest of the world don't liked it.
here are some of the reason i got in many forums why americans prefer flip Phones:
1. They Look stylish and cool than barphones small enough to fit pockets
2. They don't like phone with screen and buttons exposed.
3. They think Flip Phones are cheap and rugged
4. Some say Flip phones reach hear and mouth well than candy Bar Phones.
5. People believe in Myth non-flip MAKES it a bad phone.
what ever it is whether Americans like flipper or Europeans like candy bar phones we Asians/Indians like Cheap Phones :) which is fully loaded, if you guys have any more points to add why they like flipper do it here.

Nokia facing the main competition from iPhone. iPhone is not a flip phone but it's a status symbol.
The screen gets more protection. Actually even I prefer flip/sliding phones. Exactly because it's so compact.
I always thought that it was due to the cultural effect of seeing the flip-open communicators used by Starfleet in the original series of Star Trek.
You rightly said that Flip phones reach the ear and mouth. To add on it can also prevent display screen damage and scratches.
thats not true , u guys are building a misconception by watching the use of flip phones in american movies, its just some Standard issues they use those phones....now u dnt tell me that americans use only APPLE LAPTOPS
