Why India not in (FIFA) International Soccer world cup ?

why india not playing football world cup? This is the question came to my mind when i Recently came across interesting information about the recent search trends released by Google that India ranks 3rd among top 10 countries in volume to search on google about soccer and fifa world cup and other two countries are south Africa and Indonesia and coming to india Karnataka tops first in the chart followed by Maharashtra at second place and Tamil Nadu in third...

Interestingly in a country like india where the only sport is cricket and where the next world cup is 2011 cricket world cup i was amazed to see the search trends released by google that there are actually loads of people who are indeed interested in other sports than mighty "CRICKET" but they are still tons of other people who actually don't know what fifa is or it is taking place this year and many people did not came to know till april until several media and institutions branded the event..

Will india ever qualify for the FIFA world cup ? this is the question that bugs me when ever i see a football match while skipping the tv channel and i know all the football fans out there are cribbing about the pathetic condition of football in the country i have many friends who are diehard soccer patriots of countries like spain, portugal and brazil.

recently i came across a statement made by indian football coach Bob Houghton that india must strive to host FIFA world cup 2022 if the country wants to lift the profile of the game just like united states did after 1994, when asked when will india play the fifa world cup he quotes "I don't know when India will play in the World Cup" but with the current given infrastructure india will never make it to the world cup...

so what do you guys think will india ever qualify for fifa world cup, dont we have potential players or cricket continues to be the only sport in india ?

India do have capable players who could make it to the world cup finals. The primary hurdle being the politicians we couldn't make it to the finals. As you have seen there are many sponsors for a sport like cricket in India. As an example, a recent bid to sponsor the Indian cricket team between Sahara and Bharthi, Sahara won the bid. This is not happening in the case of football. As explained, cronyism is also a major problem. What does politicians do here in the first place. It is not their department to be taken care of. These departments should be headed by some other member beside a politician, then we could have had some hope. Unless these state change and corruption becomes minimal, will we be able to make it to the FIFA finals.
Hope this will happen soon. This is my dream as well. Whenever I see football matches and the teams singing their National Anthems, I dream too that when are we going to sing our National Anthem and play before millions of people.
Let us pray that this may happen soon...

india has capable players ..no doubt about it.only thing we need to spread awareness about football, encourage young talents& most importantly,we need to convince the sponsors that football through efforts can be made as popular as cricket.if the sports ministry takes this matter seriously, its just a matter of time when we will see india ranked as one of the strongest soccer nations of the world.let us not lose hope.

It is a shame , countries like new zeland and small african countries play in fifa where population hardly cross 1 crore whereas india is a land of population 100 crores and we are not in the list of top 100 even , cricket now played like business and it does not show the spirit of true game ,

Not only New Zealand but also South Africa, Australia and England are very good in Football and Cricket as well. Football is Global Game and if India want to show the real power of Indians and throw Bat and Ball of Cricket and Go for Football........ Global Sports.

Uruguay having 30 Lakh population reached the world cup semi finals and we having 400 times their population with 120 crore population cannot produce even 20 soccer players who can even qualify for the world cup. we stand 121 in the world. what a shame...

India used a whole lot of mysticism/magic in so many sports which lead to their ban. if not to maintain the popularity of Cricket, England would have banned them also. They often use 22 players for soccer, 11 invincible ones. How can you win such team. FIFA Banned them. I heard the javelin thrown by one Indian in the 20th century is yet to land. email me if you have proof this story is wrong @ aschizom1(at)yahoo.com

Some time ago when the fifa world cup replica was doing itz rounds across the globe, when it was in india, it came to the hands of IM vijayen ex indian captain. All he could do was hold the cup, kiss it and cry!
The reason tears came was because, we as a country have the talent but to be world class needs extensive training.
Its mainly the mad worship towards cricket that is shunning away the great game of soccer.
Even one of my biggest dreams is india lifting the FIFA world cup.
I am very much sad that this might not happen during my lifetime.
If Japan,Korea,uruguay,...can qualify and can reach the quaters and semis.
WE as a super power WHY CANT WE???!!!!

I have asked the question several times, but did not get any tangible answer. Not only in football, but take a look at India's performance in their previous Olympic campaigns too.
One colleague of Indian origin suggest the problem could be linked to diet.
