What happens to blog or website when we die?

recently out of the blue one weird question came in to my mind "what happens to our blog if we die"? though the thought was silly it made me think quite for some time below are some questions that made me think real hard What happens to our website who will renew the domain? What happens if our blogs or website is long dormant and un updated will our posts will be discarded by our domain host or blogger? so will our hard work of blogging just sits in virtual space and get forgotten overtime? these are many of few questions that was baffling me.

though after searching on the Google i did not found any policies on this matter whether the deceased members of the family or friends can get access to their website or blog accounts so that they can continue their work or maintain it in their memories? and i also did not find any claim policy or something in that matter(correct me if i am wrong) though i consider the personal blog or website is an asset similar to other assets such as house or share or a balance in the bank i think the webcompanies should initiate some thing like a beneficiary note which applies to other assets such as bank account or properties so that the website or blog will be transferred to the rightful owners.

so guys here are my few tips on how to save your blog or website in long run:

1. Try to share your website credential with at least one of your family members
2. At least try to write credential information some where in your personal dairy(though risky some times very handy) because people tend to read the whole dairy in curiosity hoping to find some important information
3. if you have a locker in bank your task will be very easy just write everything in a envelope and keep it there i bet it will get into the right hands or beneficiary during the clearance

what every it is the fate of the blogs or website will always be in chaos whether it will be maintained or not depending on the family members and friends and depends on fact whether they are technically challenged or really have interest in continuing with it, so what do you guys think on how to deal with such kind of situations do pour in your suggestions so that we bloggers can benefit from it ;) and also tell us have you ever thought of it?

Couple of days i read an article about a man who wrote in his will the details and succession of his virtual identities. Tried to find the link but could not trace it now.

You have raised an important point. Sites on the subdomain of blogger, wordpress etc may stand against time and won't get deleted but the serious issue arises with the self-hosted domains. Yes, even if it has to continue, you need to identify someone who shall be interested in continuing the site...

there are web services that help you with this. example1 http://lifehacker.com/5170883/death-switch-sends-out-emails-upon-your-demise
example 2 http://www.wikihow.com/Share-Your-Obituary-with-Your-Online-Friends

there's a service that pings u via email if u're alive depending on how soon u respond, else ur secret details like blog passwords are mailed to ur chosen 'beneficiary'
