How to configure broadband connection on ubuntu Linux ?

first question everyone asks after installing ubuntu or any linux os is how to set ip address or configure lan settings to browse internet, couple of months ago i filled online form for a free ubuntu cd which i got after few weeks but did not installed it as i was very much satisfied with windows but recently i got hand on this cd while searching for something and thought of installing and play with it i decided to install on my window xp as a dual boot so that i can switch between windows or ubuntu.

so after installing i could not browse internet so after few tries i was able to configure it with my BSNL broadband below are the steps on how to configure bsnl broadband on ubuntu

Step 1:
goto Taskbar --> System --> Administration --> Network.

Step 2:
now on the newtwork window click on the Unlock button as shown in below pic and then it will ask for login/Administrative password, Enter your Password. and click Authenticate so that it will unlock the locked features in the window.

Step 3:
now Click on option "Wired connection" and then its etho properties if you have static ip address or your broadband require ip address you can select the option "Static ip address" and give the ip address, subnet mask and gateway as shown in below pic

or if your network supports dynamic you can select “Automatic configuration (DHCP)” from the list and click OK as shown in below pic

Step 4:
Select the option Point to Point connection, and go to its properties. It will pop up the pppo properties window now in general tab Check the “Enable this connection”, and select “PPPoE connection type” from the list and Enter the user name and password in text boxes

and now Go to Modem tab in same popup Window, select the Ethernet interface or Generally the eth0 Go to option tab select all check boxes and then click ok as shown in below pic

now restart your browser(not necessary) and type the url you could see the webpages and able to browse the world wide web normally

when it comes to the process of creating our own ip address in an authenticated manner www.ip-details.com comes to the rescue and it is really effective
